The Chinaman Gulch Loop Trail is considered one of the more difficult 4WD trails in the area. A loop trail, it spans 2.5 miles in rugged and rocky hills southeast of Buena Vista. Although the scenery is considered less dramatic, it makes up with a variety of road obstacles, including the Rock Garden, Whale Rock and Double Whammy.
Directions:
From the center of Buena Vista, travel south on Highway 24 and make a left at the traffic light at Johnson Village. (The sign will say Highway 24 west, Highway 285 north, as if one is traveling to Denver or Colorado Springs.) Drive through Johnson Village and make a right on County Road 301.
From County Road 301, travel approximately 1.5 to 2 miles and turn left at the gate for Chinaman Gulch and Carnage Canyon. There are two gates that need to be opened and closed to reach the parking lot. Then follow signs to the beginning of the loop trail.
As always, it is recommended that you be fully prepared for any kind of weather. Carry plenty of food and water. Have a quality map with you. Do not drive on 4WD roads that are beyond your abilities or your vehicle.
