Probably one of the most beautiful places to enjoy the fall colors is via Highway 82 from Twin Lakes to Independence Pass. (From Buena Vista, travel north on Highway 24 for 22 miles and turn west at the main sign for Highway 82 and Twin Lakes.)
The mountain views alone are breathtaking in Twin Lakes, but then with the added feature of shimmering yellow aspen leaves make it wonderful. Some photographers stop and walk to the base of the lakes, where, if it’s sunny, the reflection of the mountains often reflects on the lakes in the morning.
Two nearby and lesser-known roads known for fall colors are Lake County Road 10 and Lake County Road 24, both north of Highway 82 before you hit Twin Lakes Village. Both meander on well-paved dirt roads among aspen groves and a gorgeous view of Mt Elbert.
Beyond Twin Lakes Village, Highway 82 continues into a canyon with plenty of aspens leaves and fall foliage all the way to timberline. Even at Independence Pass, the majestic mountain views might be complimented with some fall color from plants that cling to the ground at such a high elevation. Drive on the other side of the pass to Aspen for lunch and enjoy more foliage before returning back.
