Browns Creek Falls. If you love waterfalls, Browns Creek Falls are a “must visit” place. Browns Creek flows in a canyon between Mt. White (13,667’) and Jones Peak (13,571’) and thanks to a series of large drops, creates a large and roaring waterfall. This would be an ideal spot for a picnic or to read book with the soothing sound of rushing water nearby. It is a 2.5 mile hike (one way) from the trailhead on Chaffee County Road 272. The trail travels through mountain forest with two log bridges over the creek near the falls.
Directions: From Salida, travel north on Highway 285 and make a left (west) on County Road 270. (From Buena Vista, travel south and make a right.) Take CR 270 toward the mountains and make a left on CR 272. At this turn, there is a sign for the Browns Creek Trailhead. Take CR 272 1.2 miles and the trailhead and parking area is on your right. The trail ascends deeper into the mountains, then joins the Colorado Trail for a section before spurring to the right. Although the trail is well-marked with signage, having a topographical map is recommended.
